The
cold war, a spate of political assassinations, and a new restless yet free-sprit of youth ushered in an era where color films out-numbered black and white for the first time in the history of cinema. Bikinis and skirts got shorter, summers grew longer, new styles of music were introduced, and while Elvis, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones redefined performance and music styles, James Bond carried the impact of a new standard for adventure films, borne of spies and the cold war. Women such as Ursula Andress, who appeared opposite 007 in Dr. No, became instant poster girls. Blake Edwards carried the class and sophistication of comedies from the past decades forward with a technicolor- if not psychedelic- eye, casting the most beautiful and exotic women in Europe through-out his "Pink Panther" series. As the "Summer of Love" came and went, filmakers were influenced to experiment more with alternative themes, as well as new camera techniques and special effects. Even the Western began to truly mature, echoing the quiet grit of the old west in films like Pat Garret and Billy the Kid or A Fist Full of Dollars. A sort of realism only touched on in the 50's expressed itself as well.
