Mary
Pickford ~ In her day, Mary Pickford experienced unrivaled
international popularity. Hords of fans swarmed her in Moscow, London
and Paris. Nick-named "America's Sweetheart", she took
the world by storm. Among her most popular films were "Poor
Little Rich Girl" (1917), "Stella
Maris"(1918), "Daddy
Long Legs" (1919) and "Heart O' the Hills" (1919).
She was the first female star to claim absolute control over the
production of her films. By every definition, Mary Pickford was
a true Diva. Sadly, even after winning an Academy Award for best
actress in 1929 ("Croquette"), her carreer ended with
the popularity of "Talkies". The public never adjusted
to a more sophisticated and mature screen persona. She died in 1979
at the age of 87, in Santa Monica, California. Largely denied a
suitable place in film history, audiences may begin to re-discover
her magic following the Milestone Video Collection, and beautiful
book of rare phots by Kevin Brownlow ("Mary
Pickford Rediscovered")
